A stupid meme
Oct. 17th, 2006 02:07 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
So, I thought that, lacking an iPod or near equivalent, i couldn't play with this meme; Then I did a mix -up of my three radio stations on Pandora (I added one more specfically for Bird - it seems to be fonder of the sixties and psychedelia than intended, but hey, it's been working so far), and allowed myself to skip songs Pandora came up with by groups I hadn't heard ever, including previously on Pandora. (Especially if I give them a thumbs down.) of course, since Pandora limits the number of skips you can do, I did ahve to listen to songs all the way through, but how's that a problem? Meant I was reading 16th Century poetry in between.
I only cheated once; one song that was completely not suited at all came up that i did know. So after I'd run the whole lot of songs, I said the next song that came up with that I knew could swap it. (That's how Luka Bloom's Primavera got in. If you prefer, the story can lack a moment of triumph. But it fit in like it was meant to be.)
The results are... weird. It's not *my* life, as
truepenny's seems to kinda sorta almost be - but then again, like
cristalia's take, there sure is **a** story implied. So I started trying to link up the story fragments.
IF YOUR LIFE WAS A MOVIE, WHAT WOULD THE SOUNDTRACK BE?
So, here's how it works:
1. Open your library (iTunes, Winamp, Media Player, iPod, etc)
2. Put it on shuffle
3. Press play
4. For every question, type the song that's playing
5. When you go to a new question, press the next button
6. Don't lie and try to pretend you're cool...
Opening Credits
Julian Lennon - Too Late For Goodbyes
Even as the lyrics are trite, repetitious and badly rhymed, and the song is all happy and boppy and mindless sounding, it's also actually all about messing up and misery and, as it says, being "too late" to salvage anything.
Waking Up
The Beatles - Nowhere Man
Nowhere Man, please listen,
You don't know what you're missing,
Nowhere Man, the world is at your command.
Someone who's been doing nothing at all of any worth, or thinks they have.
Nowhere ***man*** implies - well, male protagonist. Not me.
First Day At School
Jim Lauderdale and Donna the Buffalo - This World Is Getting Mean
This song was new to me, but it was good, and I actually heard the words, and it fit so well (The title says it all, theme-wise). Out of the cocoon - and right solidly into exclusion and nastiness. Aside from Junior High, not my take on school. This is SO not my story.
Falling In Love
David Bowie - See Emily Play
She's often inclined to borrow somebody's dreams 'till tomorrow
...
Put on a gown that touches the ground
Float on a river for ever and ever
And now we have him succumbing to a crush that's more self-destructive than sheltering; he's come out of that nowhere land, but the world's full of all kinds of paucities, and this girl's a clear example (and victim. We can feel badly for her, too, even as she messes up our hero.)
Fight Song
Fleetwood Mac - Monday Morning
Monday morning you look so fine
Friday I got travelin' on my mind...
I guess it's uptempo, but not one that I'd want to fight to. Maybe in this context it's meant to be a relationship style fight, not a physical fight. The new crush being sick of him so quickly seems to fit.
Breaking Up
Leonard Cohen - In my Secret Life
I smile when I’m angry.
I cheat and I lie.
I do what I have to do
To get by.
But I know what is wrong,
And I know what is right.
And I’d die for the truth
In My Secret Life.
Okay. Leonard Cohen + Break-up. Could Pandora have pulled a more obvious choice?
Our hero is no longer someone who's done nothing. Now he's done everything, inspired by this messed up girlfriend who's already bored of him. And for her sake, he slid into becoming everything he finds wrong with the world, while trying to pretend he was better than that.
Prom
Richard Thompson - Mr. Rebound
She was gone before I remembered to cling.
Was I moving too slowly to catch her
Or was she by nature a slippery thing -
(She slid) into the arms of Mr. Rebound...
Okay, it *was* possible to have a more obvious break-up song. This is just the second half of the last scene; that first love does its implosion in public. Whee. Except now he's ready to break out and do something --
Life Is Good
Oysterband - Hal-an-Tow
We shall to the merry green wood
To hunt the f-ckin' hare, o --
Hal-an-Tow, Jolly Rumble-o
We were up long before the day-o
To welcome in the summer time
To welcome in the May-o
Summer is a comin' in
And winter's gone away.
(This **is** just about the msot feel-good song in folk. No, that's not how the lyrics go - it's "buck and hare" - but it's how I heard it the first time I heard this version, and I can't hear it properly now.)
Mental Breakdown
Steeleye Span - Montrose
Soon the year of miracles, like the slowly setting sun,
Was melting now before his eyes, all he could do was done.
At Philiphaugh and Carbisdale when fortune did turn cold,
A cloud of Devils at the gate showed James the road somehow.
So, our nowhwere man got ambitious - maybe inspired by the crash of his first love, and by having faced up to the nasty ways he participated int he injustice and lies. he broke out of that, helped bring in a new happier time, he's fought and won, and won and won... and it all falls apart, and shatters him with it.
Flashback
Kate Rusby - The Lark
If you could hear me speak, where would I begin?
Time it is past now, and I roam free
Is it wrong to wish you still need me
But now there's something he didn't notice before; something that he did even in his supposed nowhere days that he'd never realized was worth a thing to anyone, and someone who needed him all along.
Driving
The Who - Squeeze Box
She goes in and out and in and out and...
I did look up the lyrics to see if there was anything of interest I'd missed, but nope, it's pretty much as it sounds. But hey - driving not exactly the hard plot point; usually it's the leisure. So would sex or music, the song's themes, be. This is the breather -- well, assuming the ostensible rest is physically active and short of sleep. Well, it's shaping up to be a battle for justice, which means mental effort and emotional wounds, so physical activity can = rest. Hee.
Getting Back Together
Jason Mraz - A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall
I've stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains
I've walked and I've crawled on six crooked highways
I've stepped in the middle of seven sad forests
I've been out in front of a dozen dead oceans.
...
And I'll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I'll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin',
But I'll know my song well before I start singin'...
And the good things come back into his life, and all the hard new lessons he just learned in his breakdown all combine to make him take up his cause again; but no longer alone, and this partner isn't like the first mockery of love.
Wedding
Loreena McKennitt -- The Two Trees
Thine eyes grow full of tender care;
Beloved, gaze in thine own heart.
They each are wounded, but each show the other how to look at what they really are, at the spirit instead of the battered body or the shape they fear. Which is good, because:
Paying The Dues
Sarah MacLachlan - Steaming
I've walked down long roads that seem to have no end at all
You never wanted time to end
To let my life offend
It's time to realize what hides deep inside your holy eyes
It's a long hard haul they've agreed to, trying to re-win the battles he's already lost once. And it won't be easy, and it strains them -- and on the night before the war, he's left alone....
The Night Before The War
Peter Gabriel - Indigo
Shifting the gear, I've got nothing to fear from a showdown,
I'll go down quiet.
And the kids downstairs making a hell of a din,
I'm all alone, getting a quote for the wages of sin.
... and gives in, a little, to his old despair and black moods.
Final Battle
Midnight Oil - Blue Sky Mine
My gut is wrenched out, it is crunched up and broken
My life that is led is no more than a token
Who'll strike the flint upon the stone and tell me why?
If I yell out at night there's a reply of bruised silence
The screen is no comfort, I can't speak my sentence;
They blew the lights at Heaven's Gate, and I don't know why
So right, so wrong; this is not a traditional battle, that is clear, but there's that feeling of facing injustice straight on. Things not talked about get blasted into the open; if they aren't stopped, yet, at least they're known. On the other hand, our hero's taken a few too many knocks along the way.
Moment of Triumph
Luka Bloom - Primavera
You are a beacon in the crowd
You bring lavender to calm
When the shouting gets too loud
Your compassion is at hand
Me, see me now,
I am August oakleaf
You, yes you are,
You are Primavera
His lover, not he, is the source of their win. She is growing by all this; he is falling. Not into wickedness, just worn out by the constant battering and the time. Autumnal.
Death Scene
Nightwish - The Kinslayer
Some wounds never heal
Some tears never will
Dry for the unkind
Cry for mankind
Ouch... this *has* to be from the other side's point of view. An eye into what they've been fighting all this while.
Funeral Song
Leonard Cohen - Our Lady of Solitude
And the light came from her body
And the night went through her grace
All summer long she touched me
I knew her, I knew her
Face to face
It's not like he hasn't been staring at his own death from the start. It's odd, though, how much the seasonal imagery came in.
End Credits
Ruthie Foster - God Bless the Child
Rich relations give
Crust of bread and such
You can help yourself
But don't take too much
Mama may have, papa may have
But God bless the child that's got his own
And after all the struggle, the injustice our hero was battling is still right here, right in front of us. The fight isn't done, and our fighter's gone.
Of course, our Spring maiden is still around -- ready to face down the winter that seems to have won.
I only cheated once; one song that was completely not suited at all came up that i did know. So after I'd run the whole lot of songs, I said the next song that came up with that I knew could swap it. The complete miss I replaced with Luka Bloom, I should say was Boiled in Lead's Over Under Sideways Down.
Did you read either of the other ones? Cristalia's starts out normal, then adds necrophiliac exes, zombie hunting, and the devil (played by Evil Sexy Leonard Cohen)

Date: 2007-03-16 07:15 pm (UTC)Opening Credits
Richard Thompson – The End of the Rainbow
We’re Screwed. Right form the start this is fucked. With a capital Fuck.
Waking Up
Richard Thompson – From Galway to Graceland
We start off all idealistic, but our idealism is an illusion – based on a delusion. The world hits us back right off the hop.
First Day At School
Midnight Oil – Bedlam Bridge
There is something happy and without the worldly bitterness… but only if one is not wholly sane.
Falling In Love
Laurie Anderson – Piece and Parts
So get hit in your head
And there may be a few things you can’t recall at all
But get hit in your heart
And you’re in pieces and parts.
Fight Song
Emmylou Harris – My Antonia
A cry not to leave what you love, lest it be lost to you – the worse because the ambition you’re chasing is nowhere near so worthwhile.
Breaking Up
Jim Moray – Barbara Allen
And never telling the other person what you feel leads to suicide. Whee.
(In this version, it has to be said, Barbara Allen doesn’t get to die.)
Prom
Show of Hands – Country Life
Career and way of life in absolute ruins, for reasons of politics as well as personal.
Life Is Good
Evacuating London
Leaving the place and people you love, with a wistful hope of getting back together, and a hope that the place you’re going won’t be all bad. That’s the high point.
Mental Breakdown
Boiled in Lead – Army (Dream Song)
“I found the first Liueutenant, he said “God, they’re gonna bomb us with their vicious flying llamas.” I dove into the llama shelter, I became Charlotte Corday…”
Yup. Mental Breakdown.
Flashback
Garmarna – O Viridissima Virga (O Greenest Branch)
Getting Back Together
Garmarna – Varulven (Werewolf)
I’ll just sum up the story, shall I? A woman meets a werewolf, who makes to eat her. She offers him necklaces and silver and finally her very golden crown – he rejects it all in preference for tearing her apart. She screams, as he assaults the tree she’s climbed for refuge. A squire comes, but by the time he gets there he finds only a bloody arm, and a young man, mourning that he’s just torn apart his own lover, who was carrying his child.
So. Yeah. Getting together. Not such a good idea.
Considering that the breakup was with someone who committed suicide….
Driving
Oysterband – False Knight on the Road
Wow. A song that ends well; the false knight is seen through and sent back to hell. Also, the performance is sheerly delighted at the prospect. One victory.
Wedding
Varttina – Kappee
A song about how the husband is a lazy good for nothing. I wish I were joking.
Paying The Dues
Horace X – It’s About Time
A time to reap, a time to sow… a time to live, a time to die. You know this one.
The Night Before The War
Sting – The Soul Cages
A spiritual battle already underway; a challenge sent, and a trapped person hoping frantically to defeat a more powerful foe
Final Battle
Boiled in Lead – Glasena Klingar
What. Drinking?
Moment of Triumph
June Tabor - Johnny O Bredislee/Glory of the West
He’s set his back against and oak, his foot against a thorn
He’s shot the seven foresters, shot them all in one
Now Johnny’s good ben-bow is broke, his twa grey hounds lie slain
Johnny sleeps in Merrimoss and his hunting days are done.
Death Scene
Sarah Slean - Dark Room
An instrumental that most assuredly does sound like music to die sadly to.
Funeral Song
Peter Gabriel – With this Love (Choir)
And echo of religious sanctity, and of giving oneself to save the world.
End Credits
Fairport Convention – Portmeirion
An instrumental so gentle and pure after all that it has to be meant ironically.
