Progress notes for August 25, 2006:

Raising the Storm

New Words: 1560 words.
Reason for stopping: Looked at the time, went "I have to work in the morning!" Which meant stopping dead in mid-scene. At least it will be easy to resume
Tea: cold milk & Dooleys, followed a while after by pomegranate-blueberry juice.
Music: Karen & Helene, Solen, June Tabor, Aleyn
Darling du Jour: Dasku lingered out over the water, both watched and watching with uncertainty.
. (There's a better zinger that's also, alas, a spoiler.)
Mean Things:All that pretty gold...
Can't stop fidgeting: Fixed an inconsistency in a prior chapter while looking something up. Flipped the order of two smaller scenes.

So nobody tried to encourage me to keep going and get this novel done by the start of school. Either I now know how few people read to the end of my whinier entries, or I now know how few people want to encourage me to write.

... in case you missed it, ;)

I know it's a personal endeavour of not much interest to many of you -- I'm not knocking it to say that, so don't try to soothe or encourage or re-raise my flags. I feel fine about my writing. I feel fine about the fact that this day-by-day pace is not of interest to many, especially those with busy lives of their own, or many friends with more cool things to say, or the like.

I also know my rambles, especially the whiny ones, are sometimes best skimmed - for all I line-edit a fair bit, I admit I don't properly revise these things, and I've almost given up on using lj-cuts for mere long prose posts because I find it more a nuisance when I see it on my friends page than finding a long post is (Pictures are another matter, and some memes -- the five-hundred question one which strains the most generous definition of long post comes to mind, though I refuse to do it -- likewise).

My posts are the epitome of off-the-cuff, and proof why I say I write long drafts, then trim. ("I'm writing you a long letter because I haven't the time to write a shorter one..." or however that quote goes.)

And if I were really annoyed, I'd be using the mild blue fire-breathing wyvern icon, because even mild blue fire breathing wyverns are fire breathing wyverns. Though I keep meaning to make a new icon from that bowl so's I can show off many annoyed little dragons.

I haven't seen that entry yet -- I'm woefully behind on everything, including all things internet -- but I like getting your progress reports. And I think finishing before school starts is a worthy goal.

p.s. When do you start school?

Hee.

It was at the bottom of a long entry, as you might have guessed, and I know most people don't read LJ daily. How often have I said I'm two-three days or more behind on it myself?

It did occur to me that asking for someone via LJ to order me to get writing the week everyone's at Worldcon (sulk) is pretty much the worst possible timing -- my local friends would be more likely to encourage me to finish the arrows, as our Gimli event is in less than a week. That puts paid to writing the Firday Saturday and Sunday Labour Day long weekend -- something I was takign into account in my calculations. What I wasn't taking into account is the need to also finish making arrows.

School starts the week after Labour Day. It happens that my first class if Friday, but when I made that resolution to be done by then, I thought I started Wednesday.

At this point in time I'm pretty sure I'm going to make it with time to spare.

I do try to keep the progress reports from being dull.

Okaaay... why doesn't LJ let us edit comments the way we do posts? That middle paragraph is just a shade incoherent. Cut the last line of it and it almost goes back to making sense.

(You did catch the wink in the main post, though, right?)

I always read all your posts all the way through and all the cuts and everything. You can count on that! I didn't feel you needed any nagging to do what you've set out to do. And I feel you are much too hard on yourself anyway!

Yes, but mothers are notorious for reading where others fear to tread. :) (Although you don't fit the stereotype: you give good critique when I give you bad story.)

If I were hard on myself I'd be beating myself up over the housework, or not exercising the cats enough. And remember the post above was tongue in cheek.

(I still need a kodama icon to answer your totoros.)
