Bye, Jweffle-cat!
Aug. 15th, 2006 11:18 pmWell, tonight we loaded up the van, and managed to pack all in with room to spare. It's real now. I've said my last goodbye to my brother before he moves to Houston.
For now, Irina, who is more than technically his cat, is staying with us; I think we're waiting the first term to see how she does here without him (but with Élise, and some people she knows, in a house she knows), and how he manages without her. Irina really is a Daddy's girl, so to speak.
This is the first time, barring about a year and a half when we were both rather young, in which I won't be living with my brother, and the first time ever when I won't see him at least once every week or two.
So far, it's mostly nice planning what to do with the space. We could use the third room, and the downstairs area already seems less cluttered (Colin putting the sprawls of tools into the storage space udner the stairs, of course, helps too.)

I registered for the first bunch of courses, sin spite of the fact that several times, for no good reason, the registration system entirely failed to find the second half of a few different two-term courses (Math popped in on the second try; the history standby on the other hand took six tries and Colin standing over my shoudler for the alst one to work). I ran into a stumbling block in that apparently, I don't actually qualify to get into the 16th Century literature course because I didn't take the right first year class back in 1994. I've sent an e-mail to the professor (I think professor, anyhow) in question, and while it may not be as eloquent as I would like (I go all formal with these things - not at all like the way I let my brackets proliferate and my digressions sprawl around here), I do believe I have a fair chance. Also, that class is only half full.
I also sent a letter to the "Medieval World" professor, to see if I can squeak into the earlier class in spite of it being full. Yes, I'm willingly trying to get to the University for 9:30 AM! Without that, m,y schedule wouldn't start until 11:30, and I could sleep... My brother said that my chances would increase when he read my last name (Which is still, legally, Heikkinen. I'm assured the application is being worked on, but we'll see.)
If I get into everything, I'll be taking 24 credit hours. Hurrah! If both professors turn me down ... then I'll send a letter to the Professor teaching the Advanced Ceramics class. Since it's a 5-person course, I'm sure I could talk them into letting in a 6th...

No progress today on the novel itself, but I bashed at the summary some more, and I ended up cutting out a bunch of one storyline, and threading back in another, and I think it's starting to come back to life. I still mean to press it on Colin later and see if he can make it shorter and tighter, but he's so far not as good with substance as he is with brevity and phrasing, so I have to start with something with some life in it.
I hate writing the summary. But then, not so much as I hate sitting at work with nothing to do, and I was pretty much internetted out for the day. Good thing I leave a copy of that file at work.

On Final Goodbyes
Date: 2006-08-16 05:22 am (UTC)Please pass on my apologies if you are able to speak to him before I am. I sorely regret not arriving to help with the final packing.
On the bright side; I've finally come up with a suitable gift by which he will remember us, and our D&D campaign. It'll only be a matter of getting everyone together for a few pics, and then some post processing work.

How does it feel to be gearing up for class?
