So I got to do archery again today, for like the first time in a month or so. So, naturally enough, what do I do? Colin shows me he's brought the thumb ring, so I pounce.

For those who don't shoot, a thumb ring is the traditional way a mongol bow was shot. Where the standard is three fingers to draw, this uses only the thumb to draw, with the index finger to steady the thumb and "lock" the arrow in place - it's on the opposite side of the bow from the standard draw, and thus, when I tip (cant) the bow, which seems to work better aim-wise in this style, it ends up on the groundward side, and the arrow has nothing but that index finger fending off the natural course of gravity. (I found that out once the hard way, when the finger slipped -- the arrow hit the floor, of course, but glancingly, and escaped unscathed.)

I've used it before, just enough to know how it's supposed to work. It's Colin's size, so theoretically totally wrong for me -- but it first almsot exactly right over my glove, so while this is supposed to be a method of drawing the bow that doesn't need any finger protection, I had some anyhow. I only had the string slip off the thumb-ring once, so aside from controlling the ring size, I didn't need it.

While obviously, I shot even worse than I would otherwise, the worst thing wasn't fighting a new style, which is as fun as it is frustrating.

It was that I hit my arm with the string. Twice.

OW.

I haven't done that in years. And I'd just been mentioning to a newcomer (yay! We had a newcomer!) that even long sleeves are better than nothing, and felt a bit regretful of my t-shirt sleeves.

And of course it made me shy of drawing all the way back the next few rounds, so I shot even worse for a bit before I got over it. Bleargh.
