Progress notes for August 4, 2014

Working on the Dana in the car for the most part, with some cutting at home.
Total words new or revised : Ultimate total is -24. This was via additions and cuts of over 700 words each, though.
Reason for stopping: Hit a chapter end where I needed to think about structure in a big way, and that sort of work is both much better done on the PC than the Dana, and best done with a less-baked brain.
Tea: On the way out, Peach Apricot decaf adulterated with a bit of English breakfast caf. None on return trip.
Music: highway noises.
There's Always one more Quirk in the character: Laurel is weirdly responsible for someone who comes across as irresponsible.
Mean Things: Figuring out what a cost really is. Also, resenting the person who needs help. Also, onset of depression.

Inevitable Asides:

Does anyone have a cure for a two-year-old's "I don't want to go to bed" tantrums? Just grit my teeth, stick to routine, and pretend the howling doesn't break my heart? I *think* what he's saying that I originally heard as 'want some water' is actually something about the door (and by implication the ability to leave the room that's denied him), or else a misunderstanding on his part of what the words mean.

Saturday was a reunion for my husband and the people with whom he lived in Kenya back when he was 12-14. I went, and had a reasonably good time considering it was an event where I knew nobody I hadn't spent at least the last several weeks in the same house with. A nagging part of my brain beforehand was saying "With a day alone I could get Joseph's room sorted, and work on his mural for the first time in over two months. Not to mention actually getting decent rest." But things went well, I had fun.

I spent the last two days as an assistant to a friend selling her jewellery at the Islendingadagurinn (Icelandic Festival) *, as I did last year, and probably won't next year. Not due to a problem with the friend; she's great and I never spend time with her and it reminds me she's fun. But the reason she needs an assistant is that she and her boyfriend have two separate stalls during the festival, one on the street/in the park, and one in the Heritage pavilion. Since at most events they have one stall staffed by two people, they can give each other breaks; that's not possible this way. Next year, though, it sounds likely they'll stick to one location, as the sales inside the pavilion were poor enough it probably isn't worth two spots.

So were our sales today, but that, simply put, is because of a sudden torrential downpour that rather spoiled the day for everyone. Sunday did well.

Mom was out there with Joseph today, too -- but she was lucky for the first big downpour and happened to be visiting a friend who lives in Gimli when the first rain hit (A second downpour caught her under another tent while I had Joseph with me in our stall, but he was enjoying the sound of the rain on our tent top, and the one intense dribble where the tent top met a branch. Honestly, he was grinning like only a toddler can.

My in-laws also left this morning - the plan was within the hour after Mom and Joseph and I left. It was a teary farewell. I imagine it will be a bit worse as Joseph registers that they're not around, and not just for a few hours.

*Yes, I did have to double check the spelling.
