The black I used to sketch out the horse in the foreground is the first time I even opened the bottle of black paint, and aside from a dot of brown roughly where the eye will be, that's all it is. A big black splot. It will be painted over around the edges as I fix things and add further to the grounds. (Another reason not to have yet added the copious mane).
I raised the question of that big horse's colour on facebook, where I mostly ended up amused by the number of people who answered "Black or bay?" with things like "Roan" or "appaloosa". * Still, having done the base colour, I decided that once actually painted in with highlights and actual shape, that horse would not be too overwhelming as a black, and went ahead and made the next small one a bay.
Photo dark because I used the flash to clear up the glare I usually get from the light fixture. Go figure.
I only roughed in the new horse thus far, just to get anatomy mostly right (*^$%@# Back leg), and the highlights thus far clash with his immediate neigbouring horse, so obviously things will Change. (I guess it's not too late to make it a liver bay.... but I don't think I've seen a picture of a liver bay Shire horse, and I really like this kind of bay.)

*FWIW, the colours of the two remaining horses are grey (Not dappled) and blue roan. I felt obliged to have at least one each of black, bay, dappled and non-dappled greys, a blue, and a sorrel. The piebald is already an exception.
