Random Music
Aug. 9th, 2009 09:57 pmSo, for soemthing a little different, I decided to do some promotion of musicians I particularly like. Most of these are via youtube, and most of them are of decidedly dubious legality, but since I'm using them specifically to promote artists, hopefully I'm forgiven. And hoepfully people don't mind too much clicking links. I dislike embeds (a prejudice carried over from a prior computer which for some reason could not play an embedded video). In most cases, you don't need to watch the video anyhow.
First up, obviously, is Heather Dale. I count Heather a friend by now, as well as a deserving and highly skilled musician.(Ditto Ben) She mostly writes songs based on folk tales and mythology, especially but far from exclusively Arthurian.
The first is a live clip I found, of Heather and Ben Deschamps, one of her most common musical partners. Whoever did the clip somehow had sound and video periodically "skip" a note or two. These two songs are barely damaged, but be aware there might be a blip (Huron Carol, in one of the others samples from the same concert, is almost butchered by it.) Most interesting is the fact that Mordred's Lullaby on the cd is a thickly layered song, and even Heather used to use at minimum a looping machine to perform it.
Live performance: Mordred's Lullaby A capella and Sedna.
And here's the studio version of one of her early pieces, a longtime favourite of mine. No real video.
The Trial of Lancelot
______________
A deeply moody song performed by June Tabor, an English mostly traditional singer of many decades' career.
Scarecrow

And in case taleisin has not used youtube to sneak listens to his new stuff yet:
Jim Moray is a more modern trad British folk singer, often with techno stylings, horn sections, and other oddities inserted.
A more traditional style work from his newest album Low Culture (Which I don't yet own)" Across the Western Ocean
A lot less traditional but also new:All You Pretty Girls (Jim's official video) (Yes, that's an XTC cover... vastly superior to the original IMNHSO)
A live version of the opening track of Sweet England (No real video)Early One Morning/Young Collins
________________
Van Canto is a six person "hero-metal" band; five voices and one drummer. Just a little odd. They mix original material and covers about equally these days.
Wishmaster (Nightwish cover)

And speaking of Nightwish
While Your Lips are Still Red

Varttina are Finnish traditional and semi-traditional.
This is the song I played for my wedding:
Kyla Vuotti Kuuta Uuta (The Village Awaits the New Moon)
And a faster happier one:Matalii ja Mustii (Sad and Mournful)
(Yes, that really *is* the title. Hard to believe...)
What's really funny is the change of image from the early videos, like this, which almost look housewify, to what they looked like later (See the first video)
And that's probably enough for now.
(Except for the one I'm *actually* listening to this moment, which is a very strange remake of an old work: Oysterband)
