This week, revised:
on Monday, i listed my plans for the days. Here's how it really went down.
MOnday: Make pretty designs on plates (Actually, do rough work for pretty designs on plates.) Np archery: Colin was out late. TV watching: last 4 eps of Doctor Who Season 4, first two of Babylon Five Season one.
TUesday: Dental appointment, then to school. Throw chili bowls. Dinner and mandolin practice cancelled. Produced 19 bowls. Was very disappointed; I wanted a final total of 30 (Actually, I wanted a final total of 50, but that was physically impossible) and though I'd initially counted 11 previously made bowls, I could only find 10. I actually did a little more plate prettifying, too; at least, I got a couple more episodes into B5 (I'm skipping a lot in first season, though, both the memorably bad and the "good but I remember them and they aren't related to the arc")
Wednesday: Trim chili bowls and mix glazes (Not in that order). Dance practice was cancelled due to Return of Snowpocalypse, so I stayed later to get more done. Still only succeeded in getting 4 bowls trimmed.
Thursday: Trim other 15 chili bowls. Mix glazes. I left the university on the second-last actual bus (IE, I took the last 70, because the extra 20 minutes' ride was less than the wait for the 60, and it was past one AM). However, I also found the 11th chili bowl from the first set. So I really did make 30.
Friday: Sag through work. Get mildly pissed, but choose not to respond, when a coworker, on hearing of four hours of sleep, remarks, "Well, I don't know what kind of partying you're doing" and seems to mean it - but later remarks of another coworker's daughter, "She seems so much more relaxed now she's out of school". Yeah. You do this. I want to see you try.) Go to university. Do last hour of glazing, and last tidying f a plate left marginally unfinished. Help someone else load a bisque kiln, so she'll be willing to fit in my three dry plates. Load kiln with glaze tiles. Set to Candle (IE, low warm-up). Home, greet guests Colin has over for arrow-repair, do more plates. Get halfway through the season of B5.
Saturday: Up at the crack of dawn (Well, 7:30) to actually fire kiln through the day (As it happens, I arrived at the Ceramics building before security unlocked it... I thought weekend opening was 9:00, itt's supposed to be 10:00. Fortunately, someone else had a cell and called security so we got in earlier). HOwever, I went to take a plate with me to work on through the day. I have three plates sitting on a chair, a stool, and the couch (One of our guests was sitting fearfully close to the last Friday). And one tucked in a box.
The one tucked in a box had half the rim snapped off, in five distinct chunks. The only thing we can guess is that our cats like to sit in boxes, and one, (Probably Elise) tried. So I took that plate with me, as I figured if I was caught "Working on wet clay" I could point to emergency repairs, the sole valid excuse. Growl and grump and almost cry (It would be a plot-essential scene).
Discover kiln is not nearly as warm as expected at this stage. Turn it up. Despair at the long day ahead: firing a kiln doesn't require a lot of attention until the last few minutes, but once you're past the "candling" you can't leave it unattended for more than an hour or so. So I ahd lots of time, not only to repair the plate, (Which went AMAZINGLY well, considering the damage), but to get in some mandolin practice and read a significant chunk of the Stepsister Scheme. And to get some food, though Degrees closed earlier than I thought. The Tim Horton's was still open, as was the convenience store, which has, of all things, BBQ pork buns provided by a local restaurant in their microwave section. Well, I was craving protein.
It seems like a restful and productive day (Abput right for so short on sleep, when I get a phone call from the girl firing the other kiln. She left campus to run an errand, and can't get back; There was a chemical fire in one of the science buildings. Across campus (And we're not linked by tunnels, either), so they didn't evacuate us. But they weren't letting any traffic, pedestrian, or vehicle, onto any part of the campus. I agree to finish firing HER kiln, since it would be done before mine, anyhow, and besides, it costs me all of ten minutes' extra attention, and that much because I'm fussy.
I also finished decorating the formerly damaged plate, once it seemed sure that the repairs were holding. That makes 6 out of 9 Done, and 3 over half-way. And I finished that almost exactly when my kiln hit shut-down. And by then the campus grounds were reopened enough for Colin to drive in and get me (Actually, by the time he arrived, the last closed-off streets seemed to be back open all around). Sigh... long day.
Tomorrow I take the other 3 plates to folkmoot, and to my anticipated longish wait for the kiln to cool enough to unload (Although I expect more than half of that will be in a computer lab, catching up on Internets and writing alike.) They should be done and timely enough. And I can start the very fancy glaze job, too....
