Several items on my mind, but not sure I'm ready to post on most of them, so this is sort of frivolous.

Having just received or bought four more CDs via the Folk Festival (Two my brother got for a slightly belated birthday. Two I bought for myself, one of which was almost half the price I expected it to be.) I've decided to make a public resolution. I am not as Crazy as my Friend Murren who has sworn off buying books at all for a year (Until she should catch up on reading the five boxes she has of unread books), because while that goal is wholly commendable, I don't think it's physically possible. (For me. Not saying a thing about her ability to restrain herself.)

So my resolution is that, until January, I may not buy anything for myself that is not on the list below. (And need not buy all of those, of course.)

CDs:
Richard Thompson - Sweet Warrior, 1000 Years of Popular Music.
Heather Alexander - Life's Flame, Midsummer, Arms of the Sea, Ever After.
Maddy Prior and the Girls - Under the Covers
Maddy Prior - Ballads and Candles
Emmylou Harris - Portraits.
Oysterband - Northern Light, Meet You There

Books*:
Sherwood Smith - Senrid, the Fox
Elizabeth Bear - New Amsterdam, Whiskey and Water
Emma Bull - Territory
Sarah Monette - The Mirador
Diana Wynne Jones - The Pinhoe Egg
Martha Wells - The Element of Fire
Jo Walton - Ha'Penny
Robin McKinley - Dragonhaven

Of course, this list is deliberately crippled:
1) There are numerous items here that I can only get by special orders (The only CDs I'm liable to actually see in any store are the Richard Thompsons and maybe Meet You There, depending on NA release date).
2) Most of the books aren't out yet.
3) Many of the books are only out in hardcover, or will be when they come out -- which usually slows me down, as $30.00 is no longer in the realm of easy impulse buy.

They're also pretty much the items that would cause me to break any resolution to buy no books/CDs at all. Not that others wouldn't tempt me badly. But when it comes to breaking resolutions, it's slightly easier to tell myself, "You can buy stuff. Just not *that*." than to tell myself, "Be mature. Don't buy anything." Not sure why, when half the time the practical effect is the same.

And yes, no Rowling. I'll almost certainly borrow the book from somewhere, but I can't justify putting it up there with the irresistibles.

* I feel the oddest urge to point out I do read books by men...
