It almost invariably happens that a day or two before the folk fest... I'm not enthused. I think the last exception to that was the year Oysterband were last in town, and even then, it wasn't leaping up and down. I want to go, yes, but it always comes on me when I still think it should be a week or two away, and I always end up wondering if I'm remotely ready*, or in the right mood, or...

Then I get on site, and it's so worth it. Yes, even with the billion drums, including some truly awful ones, echoing through the campground (That reminds me, must learn the words to Berwyn's doubek song), the celebrations going until 4:00AM, the tricky footing on bare feet, the mosquitoes, the danger of being poured upon (Not this year) or getting heatstroke (Definitely this year). The lack of showers, slightly alleviated by this present re-visit to town.

The lack of sleep, exacerbated by deliberately staying up late the night before to A) finish the scene, and B) so I could fall asleep on site yesterday even in the midst of a million doumbeks, bongoes, random whoops, and happy conversations.

Even when I have a 6:00 Am shift to start. Heck, that was made fun because I got to putter about in the golf cart, which is like driving a car, except slower, more capable of tighter turns, and not scary. That will make up for missing most of Saturday because I'm on volunteer shift (actually, what will make up for that will be being totally free - free! - to do what I will around my shifts. I liked raffle well enough, as you don't have shifts away from the festivals, but you are "on" and working a lot longer.)

This is part of why I'm back in town even though I was camping at the site last night. I had to camp to be there for 6:00AM, but then today is quiet, and empty... so I decided to slip back into town. IN fact I planned it that way, because, well, this way, I hauled the tent and its sundries in a heavy load yesterday - and the cooler and most of my clothes and *that* heavy load today. The trip out will be slightly heavier, but, oh well. This year I have a wheeler! That helps so so much...

Anyhow, much sun to come, much music. Pretty crafts to look at (But hopefully not buy - I have every intention of spending the bare minimum this year.) Plus the Baggiecon crew in the campground, where I get to participate in the music. Hopes for good northern lights. Happy vibes. Tons of water and other drinks. Some excellent food; they feed the volunteers well, and of course, there's plenty of fancies to buy the rest of the time.

See you all on Monday, when I'm baked, tired, slightly sunburnt, and mindless. And still convinced, usually, that it's worth it.

* The one year I truly wasn't ready was the year they reduced the number of campground passes, told everyone and his dog, caused a panic, and caused them all to be sold out by Wednesday AM for the first time - since every year previous I'd bought my pass Thursday evening, this was a bit of a jolt... I had to phone Colin for a lift home, and while I ended up getting a pass in the end, via the excellent Green Man Editor rather than via festival crew, it was a long convoluted process. Since then it's become normal for them all to be gone by the time the campground opens, but I've also switched to campground traffic, a crew where we get our camping passes as a part of the deal, since, hey, how do you patrol a campground you can't get into?
