Progress notes for June 2, 2007:

Bird of Dusk

Total words new or revised : 579
Probable percentage actually new: 100%
Reason for stopping: Tired
Tea: grenade soda.
Music: Boiled in Lead - Boiled alive ('92)
There's Always one more Quirk in the character: Jen could if she wanted quote the entirety of the Princess Bride, start to end -- and do all the voices.
Mean Things: She starts doing just that. (Okay, she only does the fight sequence)
Darling du jour: On the other hand, the painted colours shone so bright that her trickster eyes saw them stream up and out, across her hands. She closed her eyes, waiting for them to launch across her face, force her to breathe indigo and ember-red into her lungs. When she opened them the colours sat politely in place, vivid but quiescent, plainly dismayed that she'd think they would hurt her in their flight. "You planning to be an artist when you grow up?" she asked, putting the cover over the box so the colours wouldn't escape again.

tyop du jour: clone (This doesn't look like much of a typo unless you know the word I was trying to type was work)

To-read pile: Diana Wynne Jones - The Game, Wrede & Stevermer - The Grand Tour. (Still working on Dorothy Dunnett's Queen's Play - and a Margaret Mahy I meant to save for later - but I'm almost done the former.) Also due for a reread of Margaret Mahy's the Pirate's Mixed-Up Voyage to the list, as I am in the mood for incredibly silly Pirate stories, and haven't had a chance to get to the theatre.

Inevitable Asides:

Darlings come in two types: The kind that are pretty decent sentences, worth keeping in the story, and the kind that are scary, overwrought, far too fun to write, and probably ought to be deleted wholesale. Or, to continue the colour theme, purple.

Last night's event-related archery tourney was reasonably fun, adn had a fair turnout even though the out-of-towners got delayed on the road anc didn't make it into town on time. For my part, I was doing crap even for the crappiness I've been doing lately ( I could compare it to the shooting I did on Wednesday afternoon... and yeah, I was down a few notches.) Half my muscles started tight and sore, and based on today, I do have some actual illness coming on, so I have an excuse. I choose not to take it; I've done passably under those circumstances in the past. I just flubbed it under pressure.

Had our June event today: very small, very quiet, with almost no out of town presence and a lower than usual number of locals even available. Even if it hadn't, it would have been a quiet event, as the heat was mildly oppressive.

We did only 4-5 dances before the heat stopped us. There were about 4 fighters out, and 3 rapier combatants - the King being in both lists. They were outdoors, but probably just as happy not to have more comers. The heavy fighting tourney was a round robin which ended in a draw, so they decided the winner by picking champions from the rapier combatants and having them duke it out, so HE Robin won the rapier... and won the heavy in HE Hreodbeorht's name.

They had board games out inside, and I watched a game of chess between an amateur and an actual skilled player, then got to teach Lady Cristina the same. I have little skill and almost no practice in the last 4 or 5 years, so I figured she had a fair hope of beating me. I won, but closer than I expected for a first-timer.

She then duked it out with the out-of-towner who actually had skill, after he and others had expounded for a while on good strategies. And she beat him; and not exactly close. He admitted he was *not* holding back, he stared at the board until sweat broke out; and she sat and embroidered and half-ignored the board until her turn came up; then she'd look at it a while, move the one piece that would ahve the best effect, and say, "Is that check?" in a sweet little voice, like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth. If I didn't know better (I'd like to say I know Cristina reasonably well, though she is a relative newbie to the group; two years, i think), I'd swear we were being sharked. I knew she had a brain, but this was truly something to see. We could tell the endgame was nigh when the enbroidery went away and she started to really watch.

Then the boffer swords came out,a dn the intellectual pursuits were gone. The original plan, so far as the day before was concerned, had been to revive "beat the kettle", and old and rather silly game that hasn't been played in literal years. Instead, we all just smacked at one another with boffer swords and pool noodles until we collapsed from the heat and the silly.

At which point Master Aleksandr towed me aside and ran me through the basics for doing the herald's part in court. I'm not warranted, but so long as he was standing over my shoulder, I was allowed to do the shouting. Not that there was a lot of business; but the King got to tease me much and mercilessly, and make me go through extra formalities in titles where possible (Not helped when I blanked on "Master" for Aleksandr.) But hey; with this king, I'd been expecting to be ribbed, sand I'm almost reassured by what he did and didn't bug me about.

I then faced off gainst the other real total amateur (Murren, a member so new she had to stand up in court and announce herself, something that *she* wasn't told until 5 mintues before) at the chessboard again, and had a game that was actually rather thrilling to watch, apparantly, as she backed me into a corner then I turned the tables.

I don't play chess -- because I don't usually have a lot of fun or a lot of enthusiasm. I want her to demand a rematch.

Colin adn I ducked out of the post-revel due to having almsot no energy; in his case, he has an excuse for it, though. he actually accomplished things before the event, like mowing our monster-lawn (Which was over a foot tall, but we've had rain for almost two weeks straight, and yesterday and today were the first real decent chances of doing so without getting bogged in the mud) doing laundry (Needed for the event), doing dishes (ditto), sewing (ditto)... while I just slept.
