So I seem to be having a strangely goth weekend for someone who is anti-goth. Or something, anyway. I went out to the Royal Winnipeg Ballet version of Dracula last night. Very pretty, very well done, and, being what it is, more sensual or outright sexy than ballet usually allows itself to be, bare limbs notwithstanding.

I'm not sure I agree with mom that the Red Dance could be shorter -- After the intermission, they pause the story to do two things, the first of which is a pantomime to spoken narration that basically runs through the 10-minute Dracula, the way other performance groups have done "10-minute Hamlet" or "10-minute Lord of the Rings," except with a few moments of dance thrown in. Then the Red Dance, which is a plotless bit, and in some ways very strange, but while it advanced the plot not at all, the rules for Ballet are not exactly the rules of story, and I rather liked it on its own terms.

I also rather likd that they found a way to have Dracula not only spitted through, but the butt-end of the spike driven into the ground, so he hangs in the air on the stake, before the curtain falls. (And the dancer still gets to get up and take a bow after.) I'd forgotten that particular visual, though I'd remembered soem of the other stunning ones, like how his three vampire-women died, and Lucy's sickroom bed transformation, in one stroke, into a bier.

And yes, it gave me ideas for things to do with Disco Dracula, too, though the dance styyles are a little different. But right now, it's really time to work on the novel. That's the one starting to haunt my mind after so much business with other things.
