You know that thing where a character suddenly says something that wasn't in the script in your head? or in the script in the last draft?

These two are having a whole bloody dialogue that came out of nowhere.

Honestly. The original draft of this scene is one of the characters haranguing the other for getting involved in prostitution, and the other haranguing the first for standing by when he was beaten up.

This version is all about Fey and kelpies and debts and promises. In short, about magic. And at least one impossible demand. From the most unlikely source.

I hate this.

I love this.

I have no idea what to do with this. We're at least 2/3 of the way through the story. I can't hatch another plot bunny. (Hatch? Are plot bunnies like Cadbury bunnies, then?)

Except - it doesn't feel like another plot bunny. I laid groundwork for it all along, without realising. (Heck, one hint about the kelpie is in scene ONE.)

This sort of thing is almost why I write. Where things chug along smoothly until something bubbles up from the subconscious, and characters start acting in ways utterly contrary to how they've been painted until now... and also utterly fitting.

Plot "bunnies" are more like big fat cockroaches. Just when you think you've successfully squished one, you discover than in its passing it left hundreds of little bitty progeny to scurry about all over your prose.

I guess cockroaches hatch, too... although, having a brother in Texas, I've heard far more about roaches than I ever wanted to, and I really don't want them in my prose. (This story is already infested with rats. And not the nice kind people keep as pets.)

That's the plan; 90% of the time, the new thing is better than the old anyhow, so I prefer to go with it and just save a copy of the plot as it was before. I had to stop to think through how the rest of the conversation would go, besides acrimoniously, but I do mean to finish it. For once, the new bunny (OR roach?) won't actually add to the word count.
