(I'll put the shameless self-promotion up top: in the process of making sure all the photos I needed were on flickr in the first place, I added a few truly old works to the not-pottery section; mostly pencil art. I mean to scan in some newer 2D work and photos of older 3D work One Of These Days)

Shock of shocks, Chris Quilliams got into WFC's art show. (If he didn't, it would have been a scandal. He's That Good.) At least, he's on their list of artists known to be coming. I can't say for sure if they told him.

I, on the other hand, haven't heard one way or the other. And I sent in my jury submission in JUNE.

I sent a query to see if they even got it.

I also looked at the pictures I sent them, and started having real doubts; were these *really* high enough caliber works to make it past a jury? I looked at the web sites of all the artists linked to whose work I didn't already know (And weren't sickeningly busy; art sites have to be image heavy, but there are limits.) Some are semi-pro -- awkward or slightly off bodies and/or faces (it's hard to tell from a quick glance over a web site whether it's deliberate style or just not-quite-practiced enough. Of course, I've seen the reverse be true; works that looked better in small on-screen shots than in reality.) So clearly I don't have to be Quilliams quality to make it.

But argh. Now I'm doubting everything; the work I put into my models, the grades I was given for the work, my self-assurance.

IN case you're wondering, these are the exact photos I sent:

Two of the cell bowls

Nessie (Two views)

Fetch (Yes, the gryphon found himself a name)

(I picked Steve's photos over Colin's for this last because they looked slightly more professional. I think Colin caught some better angles, though.)

Yes, to a degree, by posting these, I *am* asking for petting and reassurance that I'm actually any good. IF IT'S TRUE. I'm also looking for people to say that either the photos or the real works don't look good enough, if it happens that this is the case. Critique is as welcome, or more welcome, than the warm fuzzies.

I think your pottery etc is AMAZING and beautiful. Eventually i will convince you to make a dragon for me, when i can actually pay you to.

I'm still not totally sure what I would do with a dragon. I know I'd try to make it something other than the obvious, the way the mermaid and the Loch Ness monster aren't typical. The gryphon is more normal, but then, I do have cats to look at any day. (There was a running joke actually that I could have made the gryphon by making a plaster cast of one of the cats...)

That's part of the beauty of it though. YOUR vision. Everything else you've made is gorgeous so i can't see a dragon, especially YOUR idea of a dragon being anything less. Part of what makes it special is that it won't look like all the others (hopefully the basics will mostly be there though :P).

(Also - don't want to imagine trying to plaster cast the cats, let alone try it... 0.o)

That is gorgeous. I think Fetch is my favorite of the lot, but they're all beautiful.

And my husband the artist(/writer) just looked over my shoulder and was suitably impressed as well, so it's not just me. ;)

Thank you. (Fetch actually lost his wings and I need to redo them, but we have a juniper out in the front yard...)

I admit, I like my pottery; my fear is that it doesn't translate to photography, or that it looks like cute craft work, or something otherwise not quite right for an art show.

I keep thinking I should add Zak's journal to my reading list, too. But I've been mostly trying to avoid adding journals recently in general.
