Progress notes for August 27, 2006:
Raising the Storm
New Words: 223 words.
Reason for stopping: Mom arrived, it was time to go for dinner.
Tea: Orange Pekoe with too much honey and about enough milk.
Music: Emmylou Harris, Stumble into Grace
Mean Things: Cave bugs
There's always another quirk in the character: Gaitann is utterly nonchalant about cave bugs.
Can't stop fidgeting: The whole reason I was talking about cave bugs is that I'd written a throwaway line the last time that got no follow up. So I followed it up.
Inevitable Asides: We got to see Cirque du Soleil's Delirium tonight - part of mom's birthday gift to me. The warm-up act (an international singer named Mitza) was good, though Colin didn't like her voice (It's a hard sharp kind, like Neko Case, and it was far too strong in the mix even for a lead vocal -- the sound mix was off in several ways for her, though they fixed it for the main show).
The show was rather what I anticipated: set pieces ranging from an almost straightforward tango to an underwater scenario, many impressive acrobatics, some darn good dancing, great music -- drawn from a wild mix of cultural sources, I don't know if that's typical -- some excellent video work (Though I'd have preferred slightly fewer spots where the screen stretched all the way across). I'm not sure what exactly the story was, and if so, how much of it was supposed to make sense on first viewing (With a name like Delirium and several references to establish this is probably a dream, I'd be astonished if it would.) But it was the kind of thing where you didn't need to worry about the sense, or even dream-sense, it made; you could sit back and enjoy the set pieces as they went, and maybe the story would come clear, maybe not, it wouldn't make a difference to the pleasure along the way.
There's so much to see at any given second, I know I missed things. Of course, I can't remotely afford to go twice.

Yesterday I didn't write because I wasn't home from work until 6:30 (on Saturdays, when I start earlier than usual and the work is "Go until you're finished" rather than set hours, I usually get out by 3:30 -- 4:00 if I'm being lazy or a driver is late.)
I'd been tired to start, and even with a day where I spent a good couple of hours not working but waiting, and read the internet until I was getting sick of it, I Still had scarcely the energy to do more than sit and read Terry Pratchett. (I still gave my arrow shafts a sanding and a second coat of stain, though. They actually did darken, too, so it wasn't pointless.)
I know, I know, no excuse... Except that I slept 12 hours and didn't feel when I woke up like I'd overslept, which I *always* feel like after 12 hours of sleep, even when I need to catch up. Clearly my grumbling about undersleeping wasn't an exaggeration.
Er. I'd best go sleep now too, then.

Delerium
Date: 2006-08-29 01:21 am (UTC)Was the singer Mitza or Nitza? I thought the first until they put her picture and website on the big screen, then I thought it was an "N" but it could have been the angle I was viewing it from.
Agree totally with your comments on Delerium. As like me missing the mermaid in the water scene; there was just so much to look at.
