Sigh… one last mishap before the good stuff.

Dana Duck seems to have something wrong with it. Well, two things; the rechargeable battery has been draining abnormally fast for the last couple of months, and I’ve become more sure that this is happening even when it isn’t being accidentally turned on – nor does it correlate obviously with cold. But rather more importantly, it’s suddenly decided it can’t connect with the computer – which means A) it can’t charge, which makes the battery thing more urgent, and B) I can’t sync the files therein with the computer. (All files are currently backed up on the card, albeit in palm format, so I haven’t lost any writing, but it could be an unfortunate PITA getting it into useable format, or confirming which files need to be synchronized with the computer).

It’s hard to tell if this is a temporary issue, something that clearing off the Dana memory completely will fix, or completely bunkered internals. Or whether this is a matter of it being lugged all over, and the slow accrual of damage most things collect thereby. Or something that would have happened anyhow.

Either way, it will be resolved in a handful of days – if this one is in fact messed up, we actually own TWO Danas. The other one has a key missing and another broken, but Colin seems sure he could swap the keyboards and still end up with one useable machine.

However, it makes it clearer that I do need to finish sewing together the bag I intended to make for the Dana, so that it isn’t just carried around loose inside my tote (In a relatively secure place in relation to the rest of the tote contents, but not really shielded – there isn’t even the sort of thin pocket wall you get sometimes for a laptop, much less the more common padded wall. I meant to quilt and reinforce one side of the Dana bag slightly for keyboard and screen protection)

All else is well. Happy Holidays!

Rechargable batteries will eventually get to the age where they won't take a charge any longer. This is happened to my laptop, the only time I can use it now is when it's plugged in. You may want to start checking Ebay or elsewhere for a replacement battery.

Oh, I know. It's not that it happened, so much as that it seemed to happen rather quickly. I had no problems with keeping it charged on the big RV trip around BC and Alberta. Fortunately, it takes 3 AA batteries as well (In case of emergency), and is set up so they can be put in before the rechargeable is disconnected. But yes, I do think a new battery is in order, and sooner than later.

Dana Duck seems to be okay with connecting to the computer now, so the bigger concern is dealt with.

See you in the New Year.
