Jan. 10th, 2007 05:05 pmFirst things first: RrrrRARGH!
matociquala, really now. Did you absolutely HAVE to start a chapter in Carnival with "Lesa woke cold" !?
Bad writer. No cookie. (Not like I can currently afford to send cookies on to anyone.)
OTOH, loffing the book otherwise. Many shiny things to admire. The relationship has none of the feel I associate with rutabagas, even a truly well written rutabaga. It's just a well drawn love story. (For those not reading Ebear's journal, don't worry, it makes sense to her.)

Progress notes for January 8, 2007:
Soldier of the Road
Total words new or revised : 2900
Probable percentage actually new:50
Reason for stopping: Class time arrived.
Tea: White chocolate flavoured coffee, followed by a machine-made toffee cappuccino.
Music: Not at the loonieversity.
Mean Things: palace bred boy ends up sent off the road into wilderness. Also, getting shot at. Also, first snowfall.
There’s always one more quirk in the character: Ketan used to gather mushrooms. Now that he’s alone in the wilderness, he really misses the pig.
Can't stop fidgeting: Note that above I’ve changed the field to words new or revised. I’m pretty much entirely going paragraph by paragraph; I read what’s there, rewrite most of it into new words, then delete the old version; some paragraphs vanish unmourned, some new details arrive in their midst.

Progress notes for January 9, 2007:
Soldier of the Road
Total words new or revised : 4000
Probable percentage actually new:Well under 50. This scene I actually got almost right, except for the actual bit right with the ghost. The lead-up and fall-out mostly worked, though.
Reason for stopping: I wasn’t supposed to be up until 2 AM.
Tea: Korean green. Then apple juice.
Music: Loreena McKennitt on serious repeats.
Mean Things: Vengeful ghosts trying to eat one’s life. Disobeying orders in the thick of battle. Major shoulder injury, plus concussion. False memories.
Darling du jour:
"The God was with you in more ways than one," he said.
"Alas," I replied, then hoped he took it for a joke.
There’s always one more quirk in the character: I didn't expect a new quirk in a scene mostly revised not written anew, but the above ambivalence about direct religious intervention was a surprise.
Random things that are really pissing me off.: The university’s mouse at this computer shuts off between scrollings, or when pages upload. So I have to wake it up before *every* use.
I think today I shall rest from this endeavour; for one thing, i really need to go through and figure out chapter breaks.

Got to walk to class in my pretty garb again today; we're doing student group recruitments once more. I agreed to go again tomorrow, at least for the afternoon. I think the morning shall be sleepness.
