random mostly TV update
Nov. 21st, 2006 07:20 pmSo far the new job's alright; everyone is friendly, they have tea, and if they didn't, they do have a kettle. The work is straightforward, not completely mindless but not likely to take up enough of my mind to detract form school. Mostly it was tracking addresses, printing envelopes, and filing, so far. Enough, consider I'm still trying to figure out the nature of the whole thing. It's in an office for a branch doing rehabilitation work with children and teens.
Although you can tell we're not British. Someone in Manitoba apparantly decided, without the least thought that this was a bad idea, to name a school Major Pratt.
And I bet the kids don't even snicker.

TV updates:
Heroes is getting better all the time. The dialogue is improving; it's still stiff, btu they're having more and more fun. It's doing the soap opera thing so I wouldn't recommend starting now without the chance to watch the first few episodes, but if you know me, we have the first few on DVD.
Torchwood, I'm still reserving my judgement. This week's episode was almost a standard horror-fest, but the nature of the enemy it turns out that they're fighting actually turns it to something better than it would otherwise be. OTOH ( Spoiler )
The fairies episode got the fairies more right than I was afraid they would, as much as they could in a 40 minute episode, and the way Jack deals with the problem is totally spot on, the right mix of heartbreaking and pyrrhic. On the other hand, they messed them up in one big way, too, which is the visual effects. They turned them into BEMs. ( Not that spoilery, as it's a what shoulda been done, but cut because you can read between the lines )
I guess I just think it isn't pushing some of the things it could push, and slips into doing things just because they're tropes. While at the same time pushing other things harder.
