Bears

I've been running into a lot of images of bears (Start with all the ones downtown), and of human connections to nature, secular and religious, and of the damage to the Arctic that global warming and pollutants are causing, and of what God says about our stweardship and/or dominion over nature. Then Heather Dale's song about the Sedna myth slapped me upside the head as a big story kernel, and caused me to decide I should really look into Inuit mythology (Not like I haven't done some serious peeking at other branches of First Nations.) Considering that prior to that, the next bit of folklore and mythology I'd been meaning to look into was Finnish, I've been thinking all the bears were pointing not only to another step in religious study, but also Northward to another story direction.

(Trust me, the two are never mutually exclusive. Those who say fantasy and fiction have no connection to the real world seem so foreign to me precisely because big changes in my life are usually preceded or immediately followed by strange story ideas.

(Okay, except for Colin's marriage proposal -- that one caught me off guard. Not that my decision to accept didn't stir a lot of thought and maybe sneak in some twists on the Labyrinth story.)

I really wish story kernels would aggregate into a story substance with better timing. Say, when I'm finished working on a current project that's set in the tropics, and don't have something else that should immediately follow the current story already lined up. Maybe I can hold onto this one and still hold it off until Winter.
