Once again, this is probably only of any interest to me and my records. But I find it an interesting compare-and-contrast to Bird of Dusk's Soundtrack (Back here) which is all about Oysterband, Clannad, and Richard Thompson, with bits of Kashtin thrown in.

Like that one, this is a sum-up, not a complete list (It's 304 tracks.) I'm trying to mention a minimum of songs per artist, and use more than one only when there's something particular to that song that makes it important. But the first ten are taken verbatim. (Which causes one artist barely represented elsewhere to get two and a half whole entries. That'd be Maddy, of course.)

Repeating themes are - Stories about ghosts. Strange takes on classical music. Vaguely medievalesque ahistory. Surprising and odd moments of religious fervour. Melodrama. Vocals either in full pyrotechnics or utterly stripped down. Nordic, Slavic, and Border Ballads.

Kate Rusby - The Unquiet Grave
Oysterband - Molly Bond (The only song of theirs, but also absolutely essential as it's not a, but THE, ghost story.)
Garmarna - Varulven (Werewolf)
Maddy Prior - Lark In the Morning
Mediaeval Baebes - Snake
Garmarna - Virga ac Diadema
Silly Sisters - Blood and Gold / Mohacs
Maddy Prior - War Games
Nightwish - Crownless
Van Canto - The Mission
Henry Gregson-Williams - Evacuating London (Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Soundtrack.)
Blackmore's Night - Gone with the Wind
Värttinä - Vaiten Valvoin (I Lay Awake)
Anúna - Gaudete
Heather Dale - The Prydwen Sails Again
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score
June Tabor - Fair Margaret and Sweet William
Richard Thompson - Crazy Man Michael (Very specifically the slow elegant one from RT)
Heather Dale - Mordred's Lullaby
Blackmore's Night - Morning Star
Jim Moray - Barbara Allen
Kate Rusby - I am Stretched on your Grave
Annbjørg Lien - Loki
Vitas - Lucia Di Lammermoor
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - A Last Illusion
Maddy Prior, Nick Holland, Troy Donockley - Jupiter
Angélique Kidjo - Lonlon (Ravel's Bolero)
Bond - Duel
Heather Dale - Kingsword
Jim Moray - Nightvisiting
Värttinä - Mieleni Alenevi (Mournful of heart is this bird, and barren its tongue)
Anúna - Media Vita
Bond - Hymn
Vitas - A Kiss as Long as Eternity (Whatever you do, don't go and read a translation of the lyrics. It's much better when you hear the mood, or take the one from the video)
The Ukrainians - Horila Sosna (The Pine Tree was Burning)
Kate Rusby - Sir Eglamore (A character got named after this. I decided he was a descendent, and a little embarrassed by his granddad's "fame"...)
Jim Moray - The Cuckoo's Nest (The cleanest dirty song ever!)
Blackmore's Night - Pastime with Good Company
Sting - Come Again
Heather Alexander - Wooden Toy Sword
Van Canto - I Stand Alone
Steeleye Span- Wife of the Soldier
Blackmore's Night - All For One (Uses Maltese Bransle as instrumental breaks)
Madrigäia - Tabortuznel
Annbjørg Lien - Old Larry
Hedningarna - Vottikaalina
Loreena McKennitt - The Highwayman
Blackie and the Rodeo Kings - Vale of Tears
Blackmore's Night- I Guess it Doesn't Matter Anymore
Michael Longcor - A Smuggler's Song
Heather Dale - Crashing Down
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - After the Fall
Karen and Helene - The Child Murderess (A Danish Duo)
Vitas - Opera No 2 (Listed on the one NA release as Opera No. 1. Sigh.)
Barrage- Mahatma
Van Canto - The Bard's Song/In the Forest (A Blind Guardian Cover)
Jim Moray - Two Sisters
Hedningarna - Grodan/Widergrenen
Annbjørg Lien - The Water Lily
June Tabor - Johnny o'Bredislee/Glory of the West
Madrigäia - Tourdion
Bond - Korobushka
Heather Dale - Tarnished Silver
Guy Fletcher/Mark Knopfler - I Will Never Love Again (Princess Bride Soundtrack)
Sting - In Darkness Let Me Dwell
Soren Friboe - Der er Sa Manne Stie
Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard - Now We Are Free (Gladiator Soundtrack)
Loituma - Secret Tears
Mediaeval Baebes - Salva Nos

Heather Dale - Joan

Keystone Albums:

Garmarna - Vedergälliningen (Vengeance) (Swedish Trad-rock)
Värttinä - Vihma (Normally I'd favour 6:12 or Seleniko, But Vihma seems to suit the story. Finnish Trad with four vocalists and some modern flourishes.)
Loreena McKennitt - An Ancient Muse (High Celtic. Atmospheric.)
Blackmore's Night - Village Lanterne (Usually quasi-medieval, sometimes hard rock.)
Nightwish - Wishmaster (I prefer Once overall, but as with Värttinä above, this seems to be a better "fit". Finnish orchestral metal.)
The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe Soundtrack.
Van Canto - A Storm to Come/Hero (Five voices. One drum. Heavy metal.)
Bond - Born (Techno-classical string quartet. Much better than that sounds.)
Heather Dale - The Gabriel Hounds AND The Trial of Lancelot (The former being a latecomer, albeit very welcome. Modern Canadian Folk/Celtic with a superior voice.)
June Tabor - An Echo of Hooves (An album of all Scottish and English ballads)
Kate Rusby - Hourglass (Simple Singer-songwriter and trad.)
Jim Moray - Self-titled. (His own description is techno-trad. It's not far off. Except good.)
Annbjørg Lien - Baba Yaga (Hardinger fiddle!!!! Mostly instrumental Norwegian.)
Anúna - Omnis (religious-sounding choral thundering in Irish and Latin.)
Sting - Songs from the Labyrinth (Music of John Dowland. The soundtrack also ends with the only one of the spokenword interludes I find truly striking; "After my departure, I called to mynde...". Because while Ketan would never weep heartily, or at all, he does end up forced into a deal with the enemy of his country, wife, and friends.)

Missing in Action:
The Lord of the Rings Soundtracks. I have two on CD, but never copied them into the MP3 player.
Various medieval dance tunes, in medieval versions or, sometimes, otherwise. Some of which are plenty fun to listen to, too.
The Hidden Variable - Kindermärchen (It's on the Youtube playlist for this, but I haven't the CD.)
Vitas - I Ask All Saints (More Youtube)
Tuomas Holopainen (I actually spelled it right without looking!) and Marco Hietala - While your Lips are Still Red (Again, on Youtube... and I'm not sure if this is on any CD, since it's not a Nightwish song per se. Maybe the soundtrack of whatever the movie was called....)
