That Was Weird

So, due to soem shenanigans online, I felt vaguely inspired to send Road Sign, a story I haven't submitted since 2006 (even though I never trunked it and never meant to stop subbing) to a very low-paying market whose current guidelines it happened to fit.

Feeling slightly bad about potentially letting it go for low pay... I subbed another story (With a tweak to exactly one line that made the whole thing make a LOT more sense - Nick Mamatas of Clarkesworld was right on the money on that one) to Fantasy Magazine, one of the better paying online locales.

... I'm back in the game?

I like good low-paying markets, too. My few publication credits, alas years and years ago, are decidedly low-paying, and 2/3 were to an editor whose taste I rather liked. And Green Man Review never paid anything but the free books and cds to be reviewed.

But - well, in this case, I know this story never went to Fantasy Magazine, which wasn't around then, or to a number of better paying semi-pros that were either not extant or were in hiatus at the wrong time. Part of me thinks I should have exhausted all those options first. OTOH, the LGBTTQ cross was a perfect fit.

I can understand having that "should"; it's really preferable to having most female writers scared to send to the top places. But if current-submission is where you'd want it to be most, I personally think that's a win.

But then, I have some token pay markets higher on my personal list than some pro markets, so take that with the requisite amount of salt :)

And I can't say much to this besides, yes, to all of it. Of course, Strange Horizons and Realms (Should they hurry up and reopen) are still my personal top aspirations - in that order - but that doesn't mean the rest line up in paying order only.

Alas, to send to either one, I think I would need new material. And alas, all the new is novel.

Alas! But there can be new short fiction between bits of novelling, perhaps?

There could. If I had ideas.

Oh, your brain is being et by the novel? Well, then there shall be other stories after it spits your brain back out!
