All About the SQUEEE!
I got the Richard Thompson 5 CD set in the mail today, which is ever so much squeefulness!!
And he's coming to the folk festival this year, which is even more so!! (Although I've had "don't overuse exclamation points" drilled into me as writing rule # 23, I figure this counts as an exception).
It's funny. I wouldn't likely count Richard Thompson in my favourite 5 artists at most given moments (Though who is on that list varies enough I can't absolutely swear to that.) Possibly not in the top 10 (See caveat above).
I blame that on the number of damn high quality musicians in my listening, not oon any demerits on his part. 'Cause damn, he's good at what he does. There's songwriting to twist you up and then put you together. There's the guitar-playing, which music experts have more to say about than I: I can tell it's good, and distinctive, and can fill a stage all on its lonesome; but it sounds like most guitarists who know their what-for think he's stratospheric. I concede, there's that not exactly pretty voice, but he's learned how to use it to its own best advantage.
I have nothing really intelligible to say, except, "Five more CDs of his stuff! Squeee!" (Okay, when I say the last, it usually sounds more like "YEEEEE!" of "WHEEEEE!" But it counts. So there, mleh.)
Oh, and, yes, he does indeed do a kick-ass version of "Oops! I did it again"
